Lately we’ve developed an interest in collecting and playing some quality board games. We’ve bought two so far, and they’ve both been excellent fun.

  • Carcassone, a strategic tile-based map building game
  • Rummikub, a game of building and rearranging sets of numbered & coloured tiles.

Carcassone was first brought to my attention in an article about German-style board games. These kind of games have simple rules and can be played in relatively short amounts of time. Unlike the bafflingly popular Monopoly, players are rarely eliminated from the game, and the winner is often hard to pick until the very end. Carcassone is a great example of this and we’ve had a lot of fun playing.

Both of these games are also winners of the Spiel des Jahres, which is German for Game of the Year. This seems to be an excellent guide for finding worthwhile games.
